“No Guns Allowed” Signs: What They Actually Mean (Legally Speaking)

Let’s talk about those cute little signs taped to the front of some businesses that say “No Guns Allowed.” Typically depicting a silhouette of a Beretta with a big red circle with a line across it as if they were trying to say “don’t carry a Beretta get a Glock.”  You know the ones usually printed from someone’s ancient desktop, slapped on the front window with Scotch tape and a prayer. Bless their hearts.

Now, here’s the truth they don’t want you to know:

Those signs? In most states, they’re not legally binding. Yep. You read that right.

So what does that mean exactly?

It means this: unless you’re in a state where specific signage laws are enforced (think Texas 30.06/30.07 laws, for example), a “No Guns” sign isn’t enforceable by law in most areas. It’s a request, not a law. And guess what? You’re under zero obligation to inform anyone you’re carrying, especially if you’re carrying concealed. That’s kind of the point.

So unless you’re walking around with your Glock dangling out of your Lulu leggings and drawing attention, zip it. No one should know what you’re carrying or that you’re carrying at all.

And legally? If you didn’t see the sign — oops — how can they prove intent?

Let’s break it down in simple terms:

If you’re carrying concealed, it stays that way. You’re not showing it off, you’re not announcing it, and you’re not talking about it.

They can’t legally search you or ask you what you’re carrying. This isn’t TSA.

If somehow you are asked to leave — you leave. Worst-case scenario, it’s trespassing if you refuse. That’s it. Not gun charges. Not jail. Not the end of the world. You’re not breaking a weapons law; you’re breaking etiquette.

So what should you do?

Be quiet. Be respectful. Be armed.

If you see a sign and it’s not backed by law in your state? That’s a you decision. Some of us don’t give our dollars to businesses that disrespect our right to defend ourselves. Others carry on — literally — and say nothing. Both are valid.

But please, for the love of everything…. don’t walk into a posted business and announce that you’re carrying “even though it says no guns.” Keep it concealed. Keep it classy.

Final Thoughts

“No Guns Allowed” signs are like those “Live, Laugh, Love” decals.

They make people feel safe.

They do absolutely nothing to actually make them safe.

Because guess what?
Criminals don’t read signs. And they don’t care about your feelings.

Personally I’m blind as a bat and love forgetting my glasses so I definitely did not see any signs!

So stay Prepared. Stay quiet.

And always remember: your safety is your responsibility not the manager’s, not the barista’s, and certainly not the laminated sign’s.
